The cases of skin cancer have been steadily increasing and it is unfortunate to know that even people who are young are being diagnosed with this lethal disease. Health experts are very sure about the fact it can be easily prevented. Here are 7 important facts on skin cancer:

1. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer which is caused due to exposure to UV rays emitted from the sun. However, even other forms of skin cancer (non-melanoma) are caused because of the same reason. Spending most of your time outdoors, or lying on the sunbeds for getting tanned, or exposure to artificial sources of light can cause cancer.

2. A person who suffers from skin cancer does not always die. Every year thousands of people contract skin cancer. However, if timely treatment is provided, the person can be completely healed from the dreadful disease. It is only when people do not undergo early treatment or does not follow preventive measures, their condition can worsen and eventually they can die.

3. Men and women are diagnosed with skin cancer mainly because of the fact that they are exposed to UV rays through natural source like sun and artificial light on a regular basis. Usually, people come to know very late that they have contracted skin cancer and since it is detected late, it can take quite some time for the patient to be fully cured. Hence, it is advisable to get your skin checked by the dermatologist every year.

4. People from Africa, America, Asia and Latin have less risk of contracting melanoma. However, they contract this disease; the condition can be more lethal for these people. It should also be kept in mind that any person can develop such a disease regardless of their ethnicity.

5. People who have fair complexion can suffer from skin cancer. Fair skin is easily susceptible to skin damage from UV rays that come from sun, freckles, sunburns, etc as compared to people who have dark complexion. Again, this does not mean that people with darker skin can never develop skin cancer. It only means that fair skinned people have high possibility to suffer from skin cancer.

6. Taking good care of the skin at young age is very important. Children who easily get sunburn because of UV exposure can easily develop skin cancer in their adulthood. Hence, it is very important to protect the skin of the children from UV exposure. Even a single sunburn at childhood can increase the risk of melanoma when the child attains adulthood.

7. Men are more likely to contract skin cancer as compared to women. Not only skin cancer even other types of cancer like lung cancer and prostate cancer can easily happen to men as compared to women.

The only and the best way to prevent yourself from skin cancer are to protect your skin from UV rays. Wearing clothes that can fully cover your body from hot sun, wearing sunglasses and using sunscreen is very important to stay away from skin cancer.
